Q: How long have you been with AccuQuote?
A: I’ve been with the firm for 17 years.
Q: How did you start selling life insurance?
A: I had been selling health insurance for several years and was looking for a change.
Q: Do you have any personal experiences which might have led you into a career in life insurance?
A: I had a friend who died of a massive heart attack at age 38, leaving a wife and three kids with no insurance, a huge mortgage and two car payments. She was a stay-at-home mom who had just lost everything and had to move with her kids back to her parents’ house and go back to work. I never forgave my friend for leaving his family so unprotected.
Q: What is the most memorable interaction with a policy holder?
A: I once had a customer who I had sold a 10-year, one million dollar policy to about nine years ago. We became close and I would call him every year on his birthday. In the 9th year of his policy, he told me that he had just been diagnosed with terminal cancer. His doctors gave him just one year to live. After I had gotten over the initial shock, I told him that he had a “terminal illness” rider on his policy that could give him up to 75% of the policy’s value, up to a maximum of $250,000. I asked him to get a letter from his doctor confirming the terminal cancer diagnosis and prognosis and send it to me. Seven days after I got the letter, he got the $250,000 check. We spoke a few times after that, but about a month later, his son called and told me that his father has passed away. I was totally devastated and saddened by his death. About three weeks later, I got a call from his wife thanking me for my help in getting that money to him when the family needed it most. She began to cry, then so did I. I’ll never forget him or his family.
